Hidden but expanding sampling bias distorts prokaryotic genome collections
Published in bioRxiv, 2026
This paper reveals and quantifies sampling bias in 402 prokaryotic species represented in NCBI and introduces a statistical tool to detect and assess this bias, with implications for the robustness of comparative genomic analyses.

PhyloThin - identifying sampling bias in bacterial genome databases

When analyzing the diversity of bacterial populations, it is important to consider potential sampling bias, which can distort your pangenome analyses. Our tool PhyloThin is a coalescent-theory-based approach to identify prokaryotic genomes that can be considered as oversampled. For access to PhyloThin, check out our GitHub repository.
